I am a vegan and healthy ageing blogger, speaker, author and activist. I’m now in my seventies. Most people are surprised at my age when they meet me. They usually think I’m at least 10 years younger than I am.
I’m still very active and engaged with the world. I write health books. I love writing – explaining complex ideas in ways that are easy to understand. I also enjoy public speaking. I also have a YouTube channel centred around health and well-being.
Many people say, completely unprompted, that they find me inspirational – men, women, people of all ages, people in all sorts of jobs and with all sorts of lifestyles.
I enjoy weight training. I use my bike as my main form of transport, averaging around 40 miles a week. I was a vegetarian for over 40 years and have been vegan since May 2015. I describe myself as a wholefood plant-based vegan. I have been a trustee of Veganuary since 2019.
I believe that good health and happiness can be achieved with simple steps and fresh insights. I want to inspire you to take control of your own health and well-being as much as possible. This website is aimed at helping you become as fit, healthy and happy as possible.
Personal achievements
I wasn’t your typical sporty child. In fact, I was the only one in my primary school class who couldn’t stand on one leg or touch my toes! Fitness just wasn’t my thing.
That all started to change in my forties when I met my partner, John. John was a fitness enthusiast who encouraged me to take on new challenges. One of the first? Learning to ride a bike – a skill I’d never mastered as a child. Before long, I found myself hooked on long-distance cycling, enjoying the freedom and thrill of the open road.
In my sixties, my friend Katie convinced me to join her at the gym. I’ll admit, I thought I was far too old for it. But I went – and I stayed. Now, well into my seventies, I’m still going strong, and loving every minute of it!
Here are just some of the achievements that have brought me immense personal satisfaction:
- Lifting 77.5 kg (170 lb) barbell for one rep max deadlift November 2021.
- Cycling from St Petersburg to Istanbul (2000+ miles) as part of an organised group in 2012
- Cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End (approx 800 miles) alone and without backup in 2011
- Cycling up Alpe d’Huez (21 hairpin bends over 13.8 km, with an average gradient of 7.9%)
- Cycling across the USA – Seattle to Gloucester (4200 miles) in 2004
- Completing the London Marathon in 2001
“Very refreshing and interesting to hear/see a different approach to life – made me think a lot.”
